Class 17 in privatization

Great pics Andrew & thanks for sharing

I never got chance to see a Clayton in BR service, the nearest I got was seeing this one when the DTG had just purchased it (still in Ribble livery) so your pics bring back memories for me :)

We are lucky that so many early diesels found their way into industrial & departmental use, as it gave the preservation movement breathing space to buy lots of classes which would otherwise no longer exist;)

Cheers Phill :)

+1 and was it lucky that they chose the 17 as it is the only one left, it seems strange that no-one else purchased one at the time. Do you suppose it's due to the amount of 350's around with BR losing yards and wagon loads to the roads

Ian,

Ribble got it from Hemelite (Hemel Hempstead Lightweight Concrete Co.) who bought it from BR to serve their trains on the Nickey Line (Hemel Hempstead - Harpenden), even then it was probably a bit of a leap of faith to buy a catastrophically unreliable type 1. In later years a pair of 204hp Drewry 04s did well enough...
