Ian Rathbone's Workshop

Some three months later and another mixed bag, some of which were literally a bag of bits and no wheels, so no photos. I start with a GW trailer car, built by Kevin Wilson, to go with his SRM pictured here last year. I didn’t have the roof to paint.

Next were two more Roundhouse live steamers, one of which was built as project in a school. The ready painted cab and tanks of both were detached to make lining easier.

I was given two ‘Coffee Pots’ to paint, one in GC livery and the other in LNER (as preserved). The GER one is awaiting number plates.

I was demonstrating at ExpoEM this year and had eight locos to deliver there. Here they are on the ‘waiting’ bench.

BC32DA27-7F3F-4B83-926C-1415E4538EB9.jpeg

The most difficult was the cab side lining on this LYR ‘Flyer’ 4-4-0, built by Mike Edge.

Also by Mike was this GER 2-4-0.

Frank Davies built this J2 from his own etches, which I think will be available as a kit from London Road Models.

F1AF9C9C-BCAE-45A6-B677-735A8922B802.jpeg

Also a LNWR Class C from a builder unknown, also from a LR kit. It took a couple of goes to get the cab panel lining right due to errors in construction - the top beading rises to the right while the running plate dips to the left.

That will do for the mo. More later.

A further LNWR loco painted in the previous batch, but for various reasons couldn’t be photographed was this Renown 4-4-0 in P4. Built and photographed by Jol Wilkinson.

These 0/16.5 Garratts are RTR produced in plain black with an aluminium smoke box. As painted they are both No. 87, firstly as running in plain grey primer and the second one as running in dark blue with white lining. (I never use white, it’s actually light grey)

For the next loco I was allowed to choose the livery. As 1361 above it was built by Mike Edge in 7mm for the same customer. So, plain BR black with a little weathering to add character.

More to follow.

Following on from a plain black saddle tank is this, a NER 2 cylinder compound 4-2-2, scratch built by Bill Davis, in Worsdell Snr. livery. 4 colour lining is not easy.

Bill is still to add hand rails, buffers and cab interior.

At the same time I was painting another single, LNWR ‘Problem’ 2-2-2 built by Nick Baines (scratch loco, kit tender)

Meanwhile Tony Wright posted a couple of photos of 4mm Duchesses I’d painted many years ago that I’d somehow never photographed.

And finally I couldn’t resist sharing this photo of my Schools on 82G. My thanks to the 82G team and Pete Silvester who built the lifting shed and crane.

All for now.

Lovely work Ian. Can I ask, which wheels you've used on the tender as I see they are disc, rather than spoked, as per the prototype.

When I was 5 to 6 years old, some of the big GCR engines were still about at Guide Bridge, in fact they looked even bigger in grot... :)

Time flies, not quite a year on so here are a few more items that have passed through my paint shop. First is Roger Scanlon’s Standard 4 tank in 7mm

5B3A6112-3838-4772-A13A-6DB7AE736AB8.jpeg

Then Dan Haines’s 7mm O2. He asked me to add the reinforcing plate on the lower RH tank side.

96607D03-EC84-4E8B-89F6-F0CBA792C12C.jpeg

And then there was this - it runs on 18.2 mm track. It was a lining and transfers only job.

Some more Roundhouse live steam for lining and ‘uplifting’. The first is American outline, so I’ve no real idea what it is based on. It comes in plain black with a plain brown cab and my brief was to paint the cab black and add the lettering and some lining. I felt the window frames should remain wooden so they were masked off and graining added later. My customer provided me with a scale photocopy of the lettering which made it a great deal easier to paint the letters on.

This Ffestiniog Railway ‘Palmerston’ has appeared on James Spooner’s thread in New Members. The engine and tender come in plain crimson so the first thing I did was paint the inside of the tender black. The body, sand boxes, hand rails and tender vac pipe are all removable so there was nothing to get in the way of the lining. The cab side FfR garter and the numbers are transfers while the tender monogram is by hand.

Finally another tender loco, entirely freelance. Again the body shells were removable and most of the lining was done without a ruler by following the edges with pen compasses. The engine crew were not present at the time.

Really top class work. The reinforcing plates are not often modelled and yet they were a familiar sight.

I’ve painted a number of coaches recently, mainly GWR.

0BB28D50-1C07-4D3B-9047-6C876339DBB5.jpeg

This Concertina in 4mm built by Ray Gomm - a lot of work in this.

In contrast to this bullion van built by his brother Phil, from the 88D kit in 7mm.

C7E10FB4-62B6-4BC9-901B-85CA147D1F01.jpeg

The next two were built by Martin Needham in 4mm from his own etches.

I didn’t know they ran dedicated vans from Penzance to Leeds. My hand lettering, weathering by Martin.

Next were four RTR Rhaetian Bahn coaches in 1:45 scale. Lovely models but they come in plain green so my job was to add the red & black lining.

That will do for now. Thank you for all the ‘likes’.

Morning Ian, on the Rhaetian Bahn coaches, were you able to remove the end platform railings temporarily or did you have to do the end wall lining with them still in place?

Ian Rathbone

Western Thunderer
The body & roof came off as one item and the end railings stayed attached to the chassis. I just had to make sure that the electrics were reconnected properly and the end stanchions went into the holes in the roof.
