However, the lamp apatures on the Hymek are 2mm diameter, so I drilled them out to try out the LEDs for fit. The 'towers' needed a very slight filing as they are about 2.2mm but no probs. The length of the 'tower' part of the LED is, for the Hymek spot on!

That's good if your supply is 12v, not good if it's anything else, especially lower. I'm not sure what DCC chips send out for lights, could be 12v, could be 3v, might even be 18v in which case your LED's will not work, just something to be aware of.

In my experience DCC decoders can vary in their lighting output voltages depending upon the manufacturer. If in doubt assume DCC decoders send out 12-18V unless you've read the decoder specification closely. Even if I was using pure 12v DC analogue as opposed to DCC I would always use resistors (generally 630K) with LEDs as a matter of course as they reduce the Lumen value to that closer to an incandescent bulb, prolongs the life of the LED (as if is it isn't already long enough already) and reduces the chance of blowing it. If using DCC You can also dim the LEDs by altering the relevant CV within the decoder.

I'd refer back to Mickoo's earlier posting - the 470Ohm resistor is the correct size to work with standard 1.5v rated LEDs.
I think there's a thread around here on wiring/fitting LEDs, which might be worth tracking down.

Just take a fine emery board/ wet n dry to the tip of the tower LED and once you have the right shape use a polishing compound or a very fine wet n dry to smooth it out (probably teaching you to suck eggs!!!- if I am sorry )

Pugsley does a set of cab interior decals such as the warning sign for ear defenders, and electric shock that you see in the cabs, they really finish off a cab nicely.

I put these in all my diesels now.

PS: I wired my Cliff Williams speaker on to the decoder and temporarily wired the decoder across the track...bearing in mind I'm not using an XL.....it's very loud with very good sound reproduction. Having said that, I think the Howes sound file could do with an update in terms of playability.

The resistor problem: if I were you I would put resistors in series with your LED's. You cannot harm anything by having them and it gives you the chance to adjust the brightness of the lighting if you are unable to change the function output voltage.

Having looked at the TruOpto range of LEDs (I think those are the ones you have), it does clearly state there is no need for current limiting resistors. So you could just pop the LED's into the loco and not have them permanently fixed, if they blow then changing is not a problem. If they don't.... you're a winner!!

I also took delivery of my modified JLTRT class 22 floor to enable my ABC motor bogie to fit, not sure when I will get round to that one as yet.....

I have decided to get my decoder re-blown by Legomanbiffo, as the decoder and sound project he installed in my 31 was excellent, and I think the Howes one needs to be updated to benefit from the ESU V4.
I picked up my drivers from Paul and Carole today (Detailed Miniatures).
They were designed to fit the JLTRT class 52, but they are almost spot on for my Hymek, and I would highly recommend them
I have one cab glazed and the LEDs all sorted, so I can crack on and get all the components that are living in coffee jar lids brought together at last

The figures look good as do the cab interiors . I'd love to put a black wash on the rear bulkhead to accentuate the panels, doors and switches.

Would the fire extinguisher in the cab be brass coloured?

Hi Dave,
Exactly like that one! Also, it won't have the headboard brackets above the head code box, and as in your Dad's photo, will have the roof mounted horns.
I think the loco looked stunning without the yellow panel, and luckily it fits perfectly with my time line of my layout
....but before I get smacked round the head by the banger blue brigade....I loved them in blue with white window surrounds and small warning panel

Hi Grumps,couple of other things to look for.If your number is lower than 7013 the electrical warning signs were mounted further to the outside in line with the handrails,and (if your model has it)there was no low down hand hold/doorhandle on the doors.
