7mm The Derby Line - Rolling Stock Gladiator Crab

The top lamp bracket on the loco is precarious to say the least. After some thought I decided to pin it with the top handrail knob. A rather crud arrangement and I had to file down the knob spigot to fit inside some 1.3mm tube ( as I'd already drilled the hole for the knob ).

I copied Nick, but my solution was not as elegant, the tail of the pull knob locates in a hole drilled in the cross beam.

I dug out my last Markits dart, sadly Mark died last year, and it looks like no one has taken over the range which includes a large range of 4mm wheels based on the old Romfordsas well as many 7mm scale items . Thats a great shame.

At last she (61412 ) now has a face... The guard irons on 61412 differ to the majority of other B16s, perhaps it had a bump at some stage and these are replacementsIMG_4168.JPG

Rob P kindly sent me some pictures, which included views of the steam reverser cylinder assembly, which is tucked down inside the frames. I found an item that would do, no one will know that its a Westinghouse pump!

I'm privileged to spend so much time at the workbench, but sitting too long is not good for you, so when I can I go for a 2 mile walk, out and back on a lane out of the village and up a hill. Exercise is never a waste of time and it's interesting to see the courtyside in all it's moods..
A misty view at 4 degrees over the Severn valley...

Nice work Simon - the kit came with an NER door which is noticibly flatter than the one I used. Yes it could probably do with a bit more dome to it, but it will have to do!

Cheers

Some goodies came in the post whilst I was away, Gladiator Phoenix, SansPareil:-
IMG_4219.JPG

I had a couple of options with the tender axleboxes that came with the kit, but it looks like the tenders were upgraded with longer hangers later on. I found that Phoenix had them available in their DMR collection.
IMG_4221.JPG

I turned up some plugs from 2mm rod to fill the holes I'd made for the original hangers and made keeper plates from 1.5mm strip.
IMG_4224.JPG

And that pretty well the tender finished now bar some tidying up and experimneting with inner pull rods...

One thing that bugged me was the single pull rods for the tender brakes. Adding inner rod in metal was out of the question due to the risk of shorting. So I experimented and knocked up some inner plastic rods that cement to sections of home made plastic tube that are glued on to the compnsation pins. They are fragile, but it might just work....

The sun has been out since dawn today, that means the glass lean to next to the railway room will be warm enough for spraying, and there is a massive backlog of work to be done. First up are the wheels for the B16, I use a compass cutter to cut out the holes for the wheels.
IMG_4275.JPG

So also there are B16 loco and tender frames, L1 frames, milk tanker, buffer stop and turnout for the layout for starters!

Now the paint has dried, I was able to fit out the L1 and B16 frames at the same time. Fitting pick ups, assembling the motion and getting them ready for a track test on the layout. That was a days work, there is always something that needs easing or adjusting. Once assembled, they ran well enough on the length of test track in my office. The B16 has a Slaters 40:1 unit that been in the motors box for years, at last I've found something it will fit into. The L1 has my standard MSC MT helical 40:1 that gets used on everything.

I'm pleased with the L1, I always knew it was going to take some work, the Meteor kit must have been in my cupboard for well over a decade... She will be a valuable addition to the passenger roster on basford North. Painted and lined by Paul Moore.

Hadn't noticed those - as usual my vision stopped at the loco rear buffer beam. Sadly, it always did back in the days when there was still a lot very interesting stock and infrastructure. Wish I'd paid more attention, it would be useful now.
Have you or are you modelling some artics for BN?
Dave.

Yes - I'd love a pair of those for Basford. I could possibly build up a Gresley pair from Kirk sides or comission an etch for the steel panelled ones. Rounding up everything I'd need might be a challenge now. It would have been more interesting stock wise to set BN back in 1950, but 1960 gives me more variety in motive power....

A Gladiator Crab this time - inspired by the work of PAD:-

The never ending rain is allowing me plenty of workbench time... I'm enjoying building locos, but the outlay these days is the best part of a grand - kit +motor + wheels + decoder + extras... But you can't have too many locos... can you?

Ouch. This is one of the main reasons I stick to 4mm (and generally as cheaply as I can).

But what is it? Some form of mogul?

Ouch. This is one of the main reasons I stick to 4mm (and generally as cheaply as I can).
Which is one reason I will scratch build from time to time - yes wheels, motor, gearbox can be a few hundred pounds but it's a lot cheaper. That said if you look at the quality of the kits and all the castings then they are remarkably good value for money.
But what is it? Some form of mogul?
Yes - hidden between photos mentions LMS Crab.

I'm not complaining about the cost.. it is what it is. It just has to be considered with other outgoings... and I know even 4mm is not cheap. These days north of £200 for a loco is not uncommon. But we've always been tight as a modelling nation, you just have to compare 50 years ago what was available here compared with the continent and the US. T last we are getting quality. And you still see it - 'whats the cheapest way I can achieve something' rather than the best...
