Todays tweak - Laser cut windscreens, the kit items look as though they are stamped and seem to have some mild distortion in places. So I drew a template in Autocad and lasered some acrylic, which to my eye looks better, while I was ai ti I lasered some card masking templates for the windows. Not much use for this one but for the next one it will be handy to keep the overspray out of the cab.

I did it myself. its a bit of a long term investment as i am likely to be out of work in the next few months and I can keep  cash coming in by cutting parts for a local dolls house builder.
JB a lot depends on the material I can source. some plastics cut better than others and each new material takes some experimentation to get the best results but I can get  perspex sheet down to 1.5mm after that it is on to different materials. It is possible to cut thin styrene but the edge is not very good, if you have something in mind I can give it a shot and see what happens, are you thinking cab glazing?

Cab glazing indeed... I was given some super thin glass cover slips a little while back. I haven't had a real go with them yet, but my brief try ended in total disaster..!

I think 1.5mm would be very thick though..  :

  :scratch: I'm sure you would have a ready market in the modelling world too for your laser cutting & custom etch ability's 8), especially in the larger scales as the mainstream suppliers don't seem to look beyond 4mm.

Phill I agree Cynric you should tout your ability and sell your wares to the larger modeling community after seeing the etches you have done for me and Lancer. If the Laser cut perspex is of the same standard I cannot see why you couldn't make a living out of it

Fantastic look on the windscreens, and once this Laser thingy is set up, I bet it's a helluva lot faster than doing those glass microscope slides... :scratch:

In answer to the first, when I have cleared up all existing projects - D1011, a few wagons and the 105, then I will start the D63xx and do the bits as I go along. To the second question, not sure!

Be very careful what you cut on a laser, Acrylic is OK but uPVC is dangerous both to you and your machine, as the fumes are very toxic.

When I cut plastic on my machine I find that two passes at a lighter power are better than trying to cut in one go. Some fine details can be achieved this way.

I have not tried this but; my laser will not cut glass but will etch it, so it could be viable to etch windows on slide glass and snap off around the outline to form perfect glass windows. Just an idea.

I have found out about smelly fumes  The machine will be moved again this weekend so that I have both an external vent and an handy door to open, otherwise there will be a divorce to contend with 
I have mainly cut ply and cast acrylic. ABS has been a limited success, I must get some Rowmark, and my management head tells me i need bulk supplies of materials otherwise costs spiral. 
So far the CAD bit is easy, the cutting is a bit of a learning curve though, still all good fun
