Hi Simon,
The Brush first saw light of day in 1963 - 1964 in experimental electric blue with white window surrounds I think ?
My example in the photo was one of my Christmas Presents in 1965, it still runs like new despite being worked hard in it's early years. I wonder if the models being produced today will stand the test of time ?

Looking more carefully I can see that it isn't in that overdone gloss and it's in jolly good condition for its age

Funny you should mention the experimental blue liveried one, my friend Brian had one of those and we all quite coveted it, a very good looking model train.

The Hymek pictured above came from Brian, he got it in some swap or purchase at school from a boy called Hanham c. '72 (can only remember his surname) and it was one in quite a "washed out" blue colour of considerable vintage. Brian turned down the wheels, fitted metal current picking up wheels (Jackson?) on the bogie and I somehow acquired it. Tim then repainted it and added handrails etc but it still runs on its original motor bogie, it has a weak magnet but runs absolutely immaculately.

Going back to the Brush type 2, Tim and I went on the Great Central in 2004 and were pulled by the Brush 2 in the experimental two tone ochre livery, which suited the body extraordinarily well we thought.

Cleaned all the windows today and am now on the fizzy wine, so no modelling going to happen tonight - hic

Might dig out some different trains on the MOP though, the Eurostar needs putting away as it hogs too much track space...

Radstock's 47316, worked upon Hornby body on Perseverance chassis DS10 motor, my first chassis kit and a great runner - beginners luck (back in 1984)

Airfix 14XX with improved body on Perseverance chassis running Portescap motor and gears, chassis work by CK and a lovely runner, still needs weathering.



Jinty is piloting Hornby "Combe Martin", industrial pulling blue suburban brake - an early preservation scheme train?

I love 2Ps and bought this when it came out back in goodness knows when. I drove it off the end of my Camerton layout at an early Bath show which resulted in broken off LH front buffer, hence the dodgy repair with no lining and slightly drooping buffer.



I was quite interested in the new Hornby offering, not liking the tender drive of this model, but have been put off by the price and more significantly the traction tyres.

I ought really to build a proper chassis for this, but given my commitment to G1 think I might instead take the tender drive apart and re-assemble after carefully examining all gears for moulding pips/lines and wet and drying all mating surfaces, and a careful re-lubricate. I think I read somewhere that this can drastically improve the tender drive's performance.

It is hauling a more recent indulgence, those lovely Replica southern region suburbans - I do like coaches

The Pannier at left is one of those rather tasty brass imports, bought off friend Brian when he went off such things 25 plus years ago

And finally my slightly whimsical industrial diesel, it was going to be a Motor Rail Simplex when it started out, but after a new chassis incorporating a successfully constructed High Level "Minimiser" gearbox and small motor I built it a Ruston-esque bonnet with a Fowler-ish cab and decided it represented a product of the "Buston" engine company, somewhere in the Black Country

Despite being only a "train set", this afternoon I relaid the main loops to lose a sharper than necessary section of curve, I also replaced the medium RH point with one with an electrically switched crossing, as "Combe Martin" shorted out across the blades with the simpler arrangement which was very unconducive to smooth rnning.

Before work commenced:



We have also come up with a "visual concept" for the station, shown mocked up in the second shot. A multi storey car park over end of line running straight ahead and "Station Tower" built across the corner of the former doorway, built "on stilts" over the platform. There will be two road overbridges in the scene, the largest running into the gap between the car park and station tower, which will have bus stops along its edges, and a smaller nearer the camera, more or less over the second point's tiebar.



I like the notion that parcels can be shunted on or off "up" trains from and to the "bay" line running straight ahead, with all the bridges cutting the scene up I think it might look quite effective, the vehicles on the left will be on a road at the top of a concrete retaining wall - just got build it all now....

New Street? - yes, I can see platforms 12a through to 9a quite easily there - 12a was where the Parcels carraiges were taken by the Station Pilot back in the day...
'Enthused' is a good word - this sort of diversion is just the sort of thing to re-kindle the enthusiasm for more serious stuff - keeping up a good momentum and making visible progress seems to be a key to it.
