American S scale in West Yorkshire.

For a long time I've wanted to make another us outline switching layout. I've made a few in the past & really had fun with them.
My current german ho layout is coming along & I keep having the thought of a switching layout & something I can weather & detail. I won't do it to my German models, they cost a fortune & its not that kind of modelling.

My initial thought was to do a 1.48 american o gauge layout but they are just a tad too big, I didn't want to do another ho layout as I struggle to see them so it's one I pondered on.
I ended up taking a chance on a S scale rtr model & instantly I was impressed by the size. Its just right in size so it means I can now slowly gather some bits to put a layout together.

One thing that has struck me is that it's got a range of items however the fact you've got hi rail, ac power & scale means its been left behind by many of the manufacturers. However I've managed to pick up a few items including a brass loco so I'm getting there regards stock. I've a few more locos to add along with some more stock before I start building a layout.

Anyway here's what I've been doing.

First up, today's bit of modelling, a Grand trunk covered hopper I've weathered. It's the first weathering I've done for ages so go gentle.

I still have a few bits left to do but I've faded the paintwork using a lifecolour rust & dust set paint firstly. I've then added rust streaks with some mig rust painter brushes & with a lightly soaked brushed of thinner dragged them downwards. I've also gone in with some black mig powder to tone the sides. I've done one side heavier than the other just to have variation.

The other project I've been working on is detailing a Milwaukee Road GP9. This is a american models loco which come rtr although they are basic to say the least.

20231015_091944.jpg20231015_100247.jpg20231015_110059.jpg20231015_110326.jpg20231025_190610.jpg

For some reason american models don't include any grab irons for the hoods so all the grab irons I've added from bits of 0.5mm wire. They do include on the shell pips for the irons though which made drilling the holes easier.
I've purchased a shapeways emd plow which I might add is like handling a faberge egg. I broke the first one so I replaced it at a costly expense.

I've also drawn up a cut wire which I made up again from 0.5mm brass wire. I've still to add the bts mu hoses & brackets but I ran out of gloss black aerosol painting the plow.

Dopey pillock here didn't look at a prototype picture & threw away the correct roof fans & fitted phase 2 twin fans. I've now got to wait to make another order with american models to get some replacements otherwise its 50 dollars for about 15 dollars worth of gear.

Lastly I have a pennsylvania gp30 In brass which I was going to remove the antennas to make a milwaukee unit but I think it could be a big job filling the holes. I'm undecided yet what to do, should I paint it as a fantasy milwaukee unit bought from the pennsy but still with antennas or just paint it pennsy colours.

Anyway in a nutshell that's what I've been up to so far.

Before ordering phase 3 fans it's worth checking out prototype photos for those with phase 2 fans. (from RR Picture Archives - copyright as noted).

From your photos it looks like your model is a non-dynamic version.

This one just received spark arrestors.

Morning Dave

Mines certainly a phase 3 I've got a photo of it with dynamic fan. That's a great photo, I might have to do a second one as I got the castings from Bill for the spark arrestors.

Well in a twist of fate I just happened to message the person who I got the gp30 from to see If they had a f7a. Luckily he told me he had 1 & after a little chat I purchased it.
The model is going to need a second nose light which I can get from B.t.s, I've already got some spark arrestors & a winterization hatch. Once that's fitted it'll be ready for a coat of Milwaukee orange.

I just need to knock some track together now & build a little switching layout.

F7... wibblewibblewibble!! You have my full attention, Sir!! And S Scale too - if US O scale ever becomes too Mainstream in the UK I may have to consider downsizing! ;)
Mindyou, you won't be too keen on my interpretation of the famous Milwaukee livery....

Hey Jordan that's cool.

I really like those soo cover ups with all the patching etc. They just look industrial.
S Scale is just the right size for me.

I've managed to sneak in an hour or two this afternoon in the workshop & I've been working on a American models caboose.

I've ripped out the lights & the paper windows & then started to make it a bit better.
20231105_125438.jpg20231105_125445.jpg

Once I ripped that junk out I added new glazing, wire handrails & I've painted them up with a touch of white enamel paint.
I really don't get why american models make a model but don't bother finishing it off with handrails etc. I suppose you have to be thankful that they are still going, I feel the flyer collectors have all but killed off S scale in the states.

I'll let the handrails dry overnight & then I might start to weather it tomorrow evening.

That's amazing weathering on the hopper. I'm still doing American 0 on tiny switching layouts but I've gone down the fictitious short line route I'm afraid.

Thanks Les

I'm only doing a small layout myself, whilst I like the idea of a large layout, time & money are not things I have loads of. I think small layouts are far better because you can really go for the details.
My aim is to have a nice small collection of well detailed & weathered models with the addition of sound.

Absolutely nowt wrong with that!! Short Lines are in reality Freelance companies, and the idea of your own fictional/freelance railroad is a popular one in the USA. I thought that with Privatisation in the UK with lots of different companies - some with the most outlandish liveries no modeller of a fictional railway would ever go for! - I thought the idea of fictional UK TOCs might catch on, especially for freight services, but no - fictional layout locations are ok but everyone is still religiously following the prototype when it comes to the trains themselves. ‍  :headbang:

It is a bit easier to do a frelance railroad in the US because most of the motive power and rolling stock is "off the shelf".
Over here, for the most part, the railways built/had built to their own designs.

With large railroads trying to concentrate on heavy-load trains, smaller lines can easily pick up second-hand locos that suit their traffic. All they seem to like doing with, for example Santa Fe locos on the Meridian Southern (MDS) is leave them in the nice original schemes with just a bit of ownership small lettering on the cab side ... hang on, this is a great MDS vid on Delay In Block, it's moved on to 2 chop-nose Paducah Rebuild Geep10s in green with 2 SW1200s(?) with Flexicoil trucks and ... oh at my age typing and listening at the same time gets impossible ... I need a mug of te... wait, there's a Santa Fe B23-7 trailing a Roadbuilders Railroad (yes!) chopnose GP9(?) linking up to an ex-Conrail -7 ... OK, OK, I'll stop now

Oh, all those lovely covered hoppers with overlaid reporting mark lettering and beautifully done weathering. What's that? Oh just rain, rust and everyday muck you reckon ....

River Raisin does a really nice brass rib side Milwaukee caboose. Des Plaines used to have them in the brass section.

Colin I've seen them for sale at des plaines, I might treat myself to one over Christmas. I've tried to purchase one online but for some reason I can't get it to work so I might need to call the store when I have.

You've really set me with those bits you sold me

Si,
I have found the Des Plaines online sales a bit iffy - doesn't seem to like non US addresses - but a quick email soon sorted it.
Rob

I might give them an email although I've raided the piggybank & got my f7a. It arrived today & it's a super bit of kit.

What I do is put their address in for the delivery and it charges local shipping and allows the order to be placed. DP will contact you for the actual cost next day. They will send a PayPal invoice if you ask too
