I think airbrush “sneezes“ are condensation in the compressor or more likely the hose. and damn frustrating…

I bought a Sparmax compressor a few years back off another Thunderer - it’s got a tank, regulator, and a pressure switch, and it transformed my airbrush experience, I wish I’d thrown my old one out years ago.

Thanks Simon, when I get back home I’ll take a look at my compressor and see whether it has those features (or whether it was just operator error!).

Hi Nigel , thanks for the track plan and the views of the rest of the world .
Any compressor being used for spraying paint must have a water trap or filter . Some are built in with the regulator and others are available separately. My set up has two , one filter reg on the compressor and one filter reg on the hose that is used when i airbrush which also has a fitting that knocks the thread size down from 1/4 bspt to 1/8 bspt . The second filter reg is the one that i adjust to get my airbrush pressure set right .
I should say that my compressor is a 12cfm and is used for everything from air tools , inflating car tyres and of course the airbrush .

I’ve been a bit quiet on the modelling front recently because of family time in Wales. Still quiet modelling but I am in the midst of four days of loco turns before we head back home. Saturday was a trip to Blaenau followed by one to Tanybwlch on David Lloyd George (as well as my three year driver assessment). Yesterday was a bit more unusual; acting as works train driver for the drains gang. The drains gang is a group of volunteers who ably manage the drainage on the FfR (which does run through one of the areas of higher rainfall in the country!). Yesterday’s trip was fitted in between passenger train paths and covered a range of items including replacing manhole covers with special plastic wood (UV resistant and with and estimated life of sixty years rather than the three of the old wooden ones), rodding some drains and building a new drainage chamber at tunnel north. A great bunch of guys doing a splendid job. A couple of photos attached.

It’s been a while since I posted any modelling here, mostly because I have been otherwise occupied in Wales and Norfolk. I’m back home now and my mind has turned back to the various modelling projects I stuck my fingers into before I got distracted by full sized and miniature steam, family, friends etc.

Those of you with longer memories may recall I had started painting my ex GER restaurant car but had gone on my travels dissatisfied with the crimson paint as the airbrush had sneezed mid spray, leaving some blebs on the side. I have picked the now dry body up and looked carefully for said blebs but they seem to have completely disappeared, which is a bit puzzling but I’ll take it!

Since my return I have been practising with my old school bow pen and trying to get consistent thin lines out of it. I started by watching Ian Rathbone’s excellent videos, which have been posted up on YouTube. Following Ian’s advice I then started honing the bow pen to the sort of shape he described in the video. I sprayed a sheet of old plasticard, let it dry and have been filling the pen, trying to draw lines, cleaning it, re-honing and trying again. I suspect I need to invest in a decent quality bow pen and try again because my results so far have been embarrassingly bad. As a result, I have dug out my pack of Pressfix lining transfers for crimson and cream coaching stock and will work with them. This evening I have sprayed the ends of the carriage black and will start lining tomorrow.

A photo of my embarrassing lining and the current state of play on the carriage body attached.

Many years ago I was at the Warley NEC Exhibition where Ian was demonstrating and he had a few pens for sale, they were cheap ones as he said but honed to perfection, in fact he was doing the honing as part of the demo. I purchased one, not sure it has improved my skill (or lack of it) in that department as I find transfers generally easier to use. The bottom line is that it is the honing that is the key, as supplied they are generally too sharp and it is a question of taking the edge off it to just the right amount, sorry I can't be more helpful than that

I have picked up a few sets of drawing instruments for very little money in junk shops. These old sets usually have a pen, compasses and sometime spring bows too. They are cheap enough to experiment upon.

Around the time we started going out, my wife bought a couple of very nice bowpens - very much antiques, but lovely to use.

The compass bow pen has had a fair bit of use at times too.

I was in a very nice antique shop yesterday. They had a good number of draughting sets including a pen and springbow loose in a bag for £4.50. They looked in good condition but I don't need any more!

I’m doing a bit of juggling at the moment on the modelling front. I am trying to complete the ex GER restaurant car but in East Anglia they normally ran in pairs with something like a Dia 425 third dining car. No one makes those but @Herb Garden has proposed a deal where I make him a building for his Skeetsmere layout and, in return he provides me with a pair of etched sides for a Dia 425 carriage. The building progress can be seen on his thread and that has slowed the restaurant car down, but with an ulterior motive!

Another distraction, as already noted by George in his thread, was a tour of four stunning model railways last weekend, which were both awe inspiring and inspirational. Many thanks are due to our various hosts for making us so welcome and showing the results of their efforts. Tony Wright kindly took photos of some of my efforts sitting on a length of EM track on Little Bytham and emailed them to me…

Back to the restaurant car, though, and I have now tidied up the second side and applied all of the Pressfix transfers to it.

I have also been trawling the internet and discovered FK3D not only 3D print ex GER carriage bogies but also make specific seats for the Dia 30 restaurant cars, so I have bought a set and the postie kindly delivered it a few days ago. They are exquisite prints so, after a coat of varnish on the carriage sides I will turn my attention to the glazing and interior.

Finally on this project, I made contact with that unfailing gentleman, Dan Pinnock and he has sent me an etched kit for the 50’ GER all third, which will provide the rest of the third dining car when George delivers the sides…

Another week of modelling inactivity… The memsahib and I drove up to Wales again on Monday with the faithful hound, me for a series of meetings on the FfWHR, which didn’t finish until yesterday morning and she to do some work at Ffestiniog Travel. On Wednesday we had a trustees’ train, hauled to Caernarfon and back by Merddin Emrys, and of course we have just had the Bygones weekend. A photo of Merddin at Dinas attached as well as a random one at Harbour Station whilst avoiding Storm Amy.

I must finish the house for @Herb Garden over the next day or so…

Likewise, no modelling recently. Got back from a rather wet, but nevertheless thoroughly enjoyable weekend in Porthmadog, this afternoon. Had a run on the Ffestiniog to BF on Saturday and was on the Supporters Train on the WHR (with DLG) on Sunday.
I believe hearty congratulations are in order, Nigel
Dave.

Great to catch up with your thread Nigel, I've got a 7mm GER Restaurant to finish to a similar period to yours so great to see someone else building one!
