Further to yesterdays collective posts a further matter, post 20th April 1958 the down CCE King worked through to Shrewsbury rather than Wolverhampton and as has been established it was rapidly serviced to work the up CCE. This only lasted until August of that year when the Shrewsbury/Wolverhampton section of the CCE in both directions returned to Castle haulage, probably in response to the temporary transfer of west midlands traffic to the WR from the LMR. This does perhaps increase the chances of the same King hauling the down CCE and up Intercity though.

In 1960 Old Oak had 6000/2/9/10/12/13/15/16/18/21/24/25/26/27/29 whilst Stafford Road had 6001/5/6/7/8/11/14/17/20/22. This is 25 of a class of 30, the others, 6003/4/19/23/28 were all at Canton.

Martin, many thanks for the clarification of the CCE workings, and I agree that an 80 minute turn round time between the down and up turns is indeed not unduly lengthy.

I've re-read all that info from so many contributors and which arrived while I was on my world tour of Scotland and although I made a general "thank you" previously I'm amazed at the amount of work which went in to establishing both geographical and timetable details of an area which has changed enormously and is still changing with the HS2 build. In particular I'm grateful to Dave @Yorkshire Dave for questioning some dates apart from the very graphic demonstration of probable locations. I think I'll have to go back through all these files and write up potential researched dates against those proposed by Tim which are, let's say, a bit shaky. Thanks again to all. WT is truly a mine of information and we'd be so much poorer without it which became obvious during the recent outage. In that respect I'm not reposting the photos I put up after my return from Scotland in the hope that Adrian will find them somewhere in the magic box. If they are lost it'll not be beyond the wit of man to rewrite the commentary and repost them a bit later.

Two photos here of a 9F doing what 9Fs were designed for. 92141 is on a freight train at Potters Bar in February 1963. It’s carrying a 36A, Doncaster, shed plate where it had been allocated since October 1962. It moved to New England in April 1963 and Langwith Junction in January 1965 before going to Colwick in November where it was withdrawn in December the same year. (SLS). It was scrapped at T W Ward, Beighton, in April 1966. (BR Database).

A1 60148 Aboyeur at Potters Bar in February 1963. This has been in posts #2024 and #3004 among others previously. It had been at Leeds, Copley Hill since September 1955 and then Ardsley in September 1964 ending up at Gateshead in December the same year from where it was withdrawn in June 1965. (SLS). By August it had been scrapped at Arnott Young, Dinsdale. (BR Database).

This is the last run in BR capital stock of 60103 Flying Scotsman photographed at Potters Bar on 14th January 1963. Apart from remarking that it was a Kings Cross engine at the time and withdrawn the day after this photo there’s little more to be said as the history of the loco is so well known. However, and I accept that I may be bending the actuality a bit, I like to think and actually believe that it’s Alan Pegler himself leaning out of the cab and giving the gathered hordes a cheery wave.

The SLS report it as on shed withdrawn at Stratford MPD on 31st July 1961 and Yeadons Vol 16 confirms it was scrapped at Stratford.

Bethnal Green again and a down local headed by N7/5 69658 on 9th July 1960. This loco appears to have been a Stratford engine for ever – certainly since January 1948 according to BR Database. It was withdrawn on 7th January 1961 (SLS) and was scrapped at Stratford Works. (Yeadon Vol 27).

An up local train at Bethnal Green on 9th July 1960 with N7/3 69674 in charge. It had lived as far away as Lincoln and Boston but came to Stratford in May 1950 (BR Database) where it was withdrawn in June 1961. (BR Database and SLS). However the SLS advises that the loco never moved from Lincoln which I believe must be incorrect. Yeadons Vol 27 advises that the loco was cut up at Stratford Works.

N7/3 69680 at Bethnal Green on a down local train on 9th July 1960. This was a Stratford loco from at least 1948 (BR Database) and was withdrawn on 4th December 1960. (BR Database and SLS). It was scrapped at Stratford Works. (RO).

Assuming we don't have the missing posts back before tomorrow I'll replace the missing photos (hopefully) on Sunday. In fact it may take more than a day as I'll have to research and create the commentaries again. In the meantime:

Moving to Potters Bar this is WD 2-8-0 90154 on an up freight train on 9th July 1960. It became a New England engine in December 1959 and moved to Doncaster in October 1963 where it was withdrawn in April 1966. (SLS). It then went to Drapers in Hull where it was scrapped in the following September. (BR Database).

V2 60881 at Potters Bar on a down York and Hull train on 9th July 1960. At the time it was a Doncaster engine where it had been allocated in November 1955 but it moved to New England in February 1961 and was withdrawn in June 1963. (SLS). It went to Doncaster Works for disposal which was completed in the following November. (BR Database).

A new A3 to these pages is 60105 Victor Wild here on an up Newcastle train on 9th July 1960. It was allocated to Grantham in September 1951 and was withdrawn from there in June 1963. (SLS). It went in to Doncaster Works for cutting up the following August. (BR Database).

B1 61144 previously in post #837 and here at Potters Bar on a down Butlins special on 9th July 1960. 61144 was an Immingham loco in 1960 and had been since October 1951 and was withdrawn in April 1964 (SLS) going to Central Wagon Co, Wigan for disposal which happened rapidly, in June. (BR Database).

A grubby A4 60012 Commonwealth of Australia at Potters Bar on an up special on 9th July 1960. We’ve debated once or twice previously whether a Haymarket loco would have been seen this far south and have documentary evidence that it wasn’t so unusual. In this case 60012 had been allocated to Haymarket since June 1937 when new (BR Database) but moved to Dalry Road in September/October 1963 before going to Aberdeen Ferryhill in February 1964 primarily for the three hour expresses from Aberdeen to Glasgow. It was withdrawn in August 1964. (SLS). Disposal was at Motherwell Machinery and Scrap, Wishaw, in March 1965. (BR Database).

I've at least started on the commentaries for the lost photos. Here's the initial seven...

A pretty poor photo of Princess Coronation 46242 City of Glasgow at Euston on 27th September 1958. This was a Camden engine from November 1954 and appropriately moved to Polmadie in March 1961 where it was withdrawn in October 1963. (SLS). It was scrapped in November 1963 (BR Database) and the remains were observed in Crewe Works Cut-up Shop on 15th November 1963. (SLS).

A3 60040 Cameronian at Kings Cross on 27th September 1958. At the time it belonged to Gateshead where it was allocated in the preceding May. It moved to Darlington in December 1959, back to Gateshead in July 1960 and Darlington again in July1962 before going to Heaton in January 1963 but returned to Gateshead in July the same year before withdrawal in July 1964. (SLS). It was scrapped at Hughes Bolckow and was sold for scrap in September 1964. (BR Database).

As seen previously in posts #2160, #2180 and #2250 this is A4 60010 Dominion of Canada at Holloway Bank in March 1963. It was a Kings Cross engine from September 1957 and moved to New England in June 1963 then to Aberdeen Ferryhill in November for the 3 hour expresses from Aberdeen to Glasgow. It was withdrawn from Aberdeen at the end of May 1965. It went in to preservation at Delson, Montreal. (SLS). See 60010 Dominion of Canada (LNER 4489, LNER 591, LNER 10 & BR 60010)

B1 61144 It would be interesting to know what working all those unfitted open merchandise wagons is. Possibly already transferred to engineers for spoil? But, perhaps there was a local use for these; by that date many open merchandise would be fitted. And July would suggest not being used for coal, as happened in the depths of cold winters when the mineral wagon fleet ran short.

The types hint at engineers' spoil carriers, I think - only one of the five clearly visible has a steel underframe (GW?), while the others are two each of LNER six plank and LMS dia. 1666.

In the photo of 92142 (front view), sleepers in the foreground have "odd" spacing. 1 and 2 are closer together, then a wider gap between 2 and 3. 8 and 9 are similarly closer together. There is a Hallade Marker (?) between 2 and 3, but not between 8 and 9. None of the sleepers are either side of rail joints – which are between 10 and 11.

Thanks for the question, Paul @hrmspaul . I can't confirm the working but Adam @AJC has come up with a likely explanation for the wagons. As for the sleepers question, Barry @Barry37 I truly have no idea!

Another around Mar 1963 is this photo of 8F 48201 which I believe is coming off the North London line at Willesden. Of note here is the United Dairies building which can be seen on the far side of the road crossing the railway. This was rail connected until some time around the 1970s and there’s a photo to come a little later of a Princess Royal Class loco collecting the milk wagons at Willesden. 48201 was a Toton engine from February 1951 until January 1965 when it moved to Kirkby in Ashfield, then Stockport Edgeley in November 1966 and Heaton Mersey in November 1967 where it was withdrawn in March 1968. (SLS). It was scrapped in July 1968 (BR Database) at Buttigieg’s, Newport where it was observed on 29th June 1968. (RO).

This has been seen a few times previously, for example in posts #1179, #1226, #1227 and #4929. It was at Gloucester Horton Road from June 1959, migrating to Worcester at the time of the photo in March 1963 from where it was withdrawn at the end of December the same year. (SLS). It was scrapped in June 1964 at Cashmore's Great Bridge. (BR Database).

the allocations book shows 7000 moving to Worcester on 25Mar63. There are no more entries in 1963 for this loco. I don't have the 1964 allocations book to confirm the date it was withdrawn but I would suggest that as it isn't in the book for 1963 it went in 1964. (There are entries for other locos to the end of the 1963).

Thank you for the more detailed info about the Castle, Simon. Duly added to the file.

With the "lost" photos now reinstated we'll pick up where we'd previously left this thread.

Seen several times previously, for example in posts #3451 and #4289 is A2 60523 Sun Castle at Potters Bar on 9th July 1960. 60523 was a New England engine from December 1948, then Grantham in December 1958 and New England again in April 1959 before becoming a Doncaster engine in January 1960. It moved to it's final shed like a homing pigeon, New England, in October 1962 and was withdrawn in June 1963. (SLS). It went in to Doncaster Works for cutting up at the end of August. (BR Database).

Edit: Are you sure that the engine in #5175 is Thompson pacific A2/3 Sun Castle? It doesn't have the pushed back cylinders of that sub-class. It doesn't have micro splashers visible on the footplate so I would be inclined to say that it is neither a A2/3 nor a Peppercorn A1 - but more likely a Peppercorn A2. The only one with double chimney and no external multiple valve regulator rodding was [I think] 60539 Bronzino. Just an idea!

This is one I printed for Tim which accounts for it being out of sequence – it was last in post #4927 on the same day and with the same train. It’s A4 60024 Kingfisher looking immaculate entering Kings Cross with The Elizabethan in July 1961. It was allocated to Haymarket from May 1939 (BR Database), moved to Dalry Road in September 1963 (SLS) and Aberdeen Ferryhill in March 1965 (BR Database) or May 1966 (SLS) for use primarily on the 3 hour expresses from Aberdeen to Glasgow where it was withdrawn in September the same year. (SLS). It was the last A4 I saw in service on 26th March 1966 on an A4 Preservation Society special from Waterloo. Tim was at Waterloo on the occasion as I have his photos confirming he was so although it would be another four years before I’d meet him we’d rubbed shoulders previously. The loco was scrapped at Hughes Bolckows at North Blyth in October 1966.

IMG#196 I've had a good look at NLS maps and frankly I'm still not certain exactly where. The "United Dairies" appears to be on a vehicle rather than a building. It may be beside an Underground station , there looks to be a possible LT roundel sign beneath the footpath lamp post. The most likely location I have come up with is Dudding Hill Lane where it crosses the line from Cricklewood to Acton Wells which of course is nowhere near an LT station. This is frankly a best guess.

I've no idea where it is, either. I suspect that the United Dairies vehicle is a Scammell - they had quite a few box trailers like that - model linked here for illustrative purposes: 26ft Scammell bow front van body - Road Transport Images

The real thing (different pattern and livery, retro-fitted fridge unit(!), late date), here:

I'm referring to the Western Region Allocations Book. I've got copies of '57 to '63. I've had to attach it as it is too big to insert here as a picture.

a. WHTS has 7000 stored at Worcester from 12/63 to 5/64 and then scarapped by Cashmores at Great Bridge in 6/64.

I've had a quick look and I would say this is the High Street Harlesden/Harrow Road bridge. On the right there is a footpath which divides the lines between those on the right which head around the corner to Willesden Junction HL. Those on the left with the train head down towards the West Coast main line.
