Thanks for the question, Paul
@hrmspaul . I can't confirm the working but Adam
@AJC has come up with a likely explanation for the wagons. As for the sleepers question, Barry
@Barry37 I truly have no idea!
These photos catch up with those potentially lost during the recent outage.
An unidentified 9F 2-10-0 at Holloway Road in March 1963
Another photo of an engine seen previously in posts #2421, #4082 and #5087 is A3 60050 Persimmon at Holloway Road at some time around March 1963. This was a New England engine from June 1962, having previously been at Grantham since October 1956 and was withdrawn in June 1963. (SLS). It went in to Doncaster Works for cutting up in August. (BR Database).
A3 60065 Knight of Thistle at Holloway Road around March 1963. This loco has appeared in this thread many times, for example posts #1429, #1566, #1763, #3521 and 5032. It was fitted with German style deflectors which it had carried since November 1961. It became a New England engine from June 1962 from where it was withdrawn in June 1964 going to A Kings and Sons of Norwich where it was scrapped in August the same year. (SLS & RailUK).
At some time around March 1963 Tim took these two photos of V2 60843 at Holloway Road. By December 1962 the loco had been allocated to Ardsley where it was withdrawn in October 1965 (SLS) going to Cashmore’s, Great Bridge where it was scrapped in November the same year.
Another around Mar 1963 is this photo of 8F 48201 which I believe is coming off the North London line at Willesden. Of note here is the United Dairies building which can be seen on the far side of the road crossing the railway. This was rail connected until some time around the 1970s and there’s a photo to come a little later of a Princess Royal Class loco collecting the milk wagons at Willesden. 48201 was a Toton engine from February 1951 until January 1965 when it moved to Kirkby in Ashfield, then Stockport Edgeley in November 1966 and Heaton Mersey in November 1967 where it was withdrawn in March 1968. (SLS). It was scrapped in July 1968 (BR Database) at Buttigieg’s, Newport where it was observed on 29th June 1968. (RO).
Castle Class 7000, Viscount Portal, bereft of a shed plate which suggests it’s probably only recently moved at Old Oak Common around March 1963. This has been seen a few times previously, for example in posts #1179, #1226, #1227 and #4929. It was at Gloucester Horton Road from June 1959, migrating to Worcester at the time of the photo in March 1963 from where it was withdrawn at the end of December the same year. (SLS). It was scrapped in June 1964 at Cashmore's Great Bridge. (BR Database).
Seen previously in post #2201 is A1 60158 Aberdonian at Potters Bar in February 1963. It was allocated to Doncaster Shed from the end of September 1958 where it was withdrawn in December 1964. (SLS). It went to Hughes Bolckows, Battleship Wharf, North Blyth where it was scrapped by the end of February 1965.
