Weathered Locos & Stock

All sorts Steve!
Airbrush of a brake dust colour initially on the bogies, oily black where I wanted to see the colour change to the blacker-greasy areas either side of the tanks.
Brake dust coloured weathering powders over the sandier coloured areas - various shades - with the fix solution used to secure. Then a dry brush - very dry brush - of artists oils, a mix of black and browns over the whole (bogies).
I did airbrush some ‘super matt’ AK Interactive varnish on the sandier areas of the bogies.
The body was my usual application of oil paints mainly wiped back off. Then whilst that was wet-tacky I applied some gentle streaks of weathering powder down the body sides that then adheres to the wet paint.
The roof mainly airbrush, using ‘random’ masks to create the mottled look.
Finally some weathering powders on top of that, fixed using the aforementioned product.
Hope that’s useful.
Hi Podiatrist 79 , is this an AK product that you use and if so what for .
I picked this up from a deceased estate sale but don't really know what its for apart from what it says on the bottle .17411339367471715485451.jpg

Thanks Neil it does. I think getting the colours right goes a long way to effective weathering and putting on light coats too. I ike the way the dirt on the bonnet top feathers away, just like the real thing! Did you say you airbrush pigment fixer after adding some pigments?

Hi Paul,
I’m fairly certain I’ve never seen that stuff before?
I can only think its use is to bulk up the weathering powders/turn them to a paint?
I shall look it up…
Thank you,
Neil.

Hi Steve,
I do use the pigment fixer, but I also use other methods of fixing, often using whatever is in the airbrush at the time.
By that, I mean I hold the airbrush some distance from the model and where I’ve applied the powders, I gently blow over those areas to fix them. It really doesn’t seem to matter what you have in the airbrush (not gloss paints or gloss varnishes admittedly) as long as you don’t apply too much air pressure and too much paint.
Hope that’s useful.

Neil.

I always look forward to these posts, another masterpiece, that looks so real! we really need another video, or a book or a masterclass, ;)I'd love to learn how to weather like this, I think the colours are spot on and the different effects very subtle.

This weathering job was completed at a similar time to the Cl 40, so is slightly out of sequence following the 1400T.
It was certainly an interesting model to work on. The light colours of the paintwork means it shows the grime up well. I had to be careful not to overdo the weathering in that case; also as DELTIC tended to be kept ‘clean’ - mostly.
It’s the Loveless RTR 7mm scale brass model.IMG_1094.jpegIMG_1095.jpegIMG_1097.jpegIMG_1093.jpeg

Wonderful work. Very obviously in use but very obviously cared for. Extremely challenging to model, yet captured perfectly.

You do need to do something about your backdrops though!

Thank you John.

Regarding the backdrop, this is a ‘new one’.
It’s the work of Paul Bambrick (Bambrick Studio). It’s for a friends diorama I’m working on longer term.
The diorama DELTIC is sitting on desperately needs redoing/replacing!
