Good evening folks,

For those who are interested in the 'life' of steam locomotives after withdrawal, and there seem to be a number of folk who are, then the place for accurate information is the 'What Really Happened to Steam' (WRHTS) website and the information contained therein.

Too much scrapping dates/locations information is tainted by the inaccurate/fabricated Hands data, as has been outlined in a number of Railway Magazine articles.

I understand that some of this may have been carried over to other resources of steam loco scrapping information.

Cheers, Nigel.

Handsome beasts indeed, Bob @robertm .

I always appreciate your input as I hope you know, Martin @Martin Shaw as I do this time. I personally am interested in the scrapping info when available as it sort of puts a full stop on the life of a particular engine but, as with all things, each to his own. Which brings me to Nigel's @46240 information. I'm well aware of the inaccuracies in WHTS so, as with all my dates, give my sources. (What a disservice the fabricated data has done to the enthusiast record!). I've tried WRHTS and occasionally found the data I need but I find WRHTS rather less than user friendly and difficult to navigate. It's yet another time costly bit of research and I'm rather more interested in getting the photos on here but as my references are quoted anyone interested in digging further can do so. That's why I value the additional info so highly. In short, I spend time looking for info on every photo, question what looks uncomfortable but only go to easy references.

However, to move on :) the final couple of photos of the Eastern Counties Ltd.

When the B12 left the train it was taken forward from Denver Junction to Kings Lynn by J69/1 68566. The photo is at Denver Junction, Stoke Ferry or Kings Lynn. The loco was just allocated to Kings Lynn in June/July 1959, went to Stratford in August 1960 (SLS) where it was withdrawn in September 1962 (Yeadons Vol 48) and scrapped at Stratford in January 1963. The J69 photo seems most likely to be Stoke Ferry. There's a hint of buffer stops at the far end of the train, and the station building position (above third coach) and siding curving off right is pretty much Stoke Ferry.
Denver Junction would have had a signal post on the left of the first coach.

Another group of exGER gems. How sad that what was in earlier times rather mundane motive power vanished so fast. At least one of each class is preseved, alas no D16

It is Stoke Ferry, The Railtour Files The siding being the entrance to the goods shed roads.
Unusually the passenger rated J69 has unbalanced 15 spoke wheels normally fitted to the shunters but things did get mixed up in their later lives.

Thank you for picking up that error, Barry @Barry37 and for the confirmation of location, Col @Eastsidepilot . Once again I'm guilty of copying the original info which we know can be a bit flaky at times, hence the importance of the corrections. Also an interesting comment about the J69, Col together with your photo of a lovely E4.

T9 120 and Caledonian 123 pass Haywards Heath on a special to the Buebell Railway. Tim dated this to 1964 but there were no trains of this description in 1964. I’m convinced this is the Scottish Belle of 15th September 1963. See The Railtour Files. Although the head board reads the Blue Belle this was carried on the Scottish Belle as well. Other views will, of course, be entertained. The train travelled from London Victoria to Haywards Heath and return. The first photo is at Haywards Heath and the second at Three Bridges on the return journey.

(30)120 was the train engine – see 30120 (LSWR 120, SR E120, SR 120 & BR 30120) In November 1961 the loco was allocated to Eastleigh (SLS) and was withdrawn in July 1963 (BR Database) so at the time of the photograph the loco was already in preservation.

The pilot engine was Caledonian Single 123. For the history see
1P 123 4-2-2 CR Neilson & Drummond

The loco was given an overhaul in 1958 and started running enthusiast trains in 1959. The loco retired again in 1965.

img848 TM Film ID 1964 Bluebell Railway T9 120 and Caley 123 pass 3 Bridges return to Victoria...jpg

This is the Scottish Belle train on the Bluebell. The pilot loco is E4 0-6-2T 473 - 32473 (LBSCR 473 Birch Grove, SR B473, SR 2473, BR s2473 & 32473) It was at Nine Elms from July 1960 and was withdrawn in October 1962 then purchased by the Bluebell direct from service.

The train engine is Adams Radial 488. See 30583 (LSWR 488, LSWR 0488, EKR 5, SR 3488 & BR 30583)

Three of these locos famously worked the Lyme Regis branch until withdrawal from Exmouth Junction in July 1961. It arrived at the Bluebell under steam in the month of withdrawal.

Here are two photos of the E4 detailed above, No 473. It’s possible that these were taken on the same day as the Scottish Belle judging by the crowds but Tim’s notes advise the pictures were taken in 1964 so perhaps on a separate occasion (although he gives the Scottish Belle photos a date of 1964 too). These two images are from large format negatives so not in any sort of numbered roll form as would be easy to reassemble if in 35mm format.

I'm pretty sure that the E4/Radial are working the Blue Belle/Scottish Belle (same coaches, well-recorded on this working). The Maunsell Hastings brake on the front from set no. 212 being the tell. I do think that the date is wrong though - all the other pictures I can find of this working are dated 15 September 1963.

For example:

Railtours 1963 - MikeMorant (note said Maunsell brake).

(Ian Nolan has a dozen or so images of the day).

This reminds me of the great engraved buffers story of the time. When 123 was doing the rounds in Scotland in the late 50s and early 60s she sported front buffers with engravings of thistles. You can just about see them in this Wikipedia image if you select the largest resolution and zoom in.

CR 123

However when she returned from her English sojourn, the engraved buffers had gone. Rumour was that someone in Swindon had rough shunted her and damaged the engravings, so they just buffed them smooth. :)

However, others thought that they had probably been removed for safekeeping, but, if so, they were never re-instated when she was placed in the Transport museum.

I noted the actual date and that Tim had the date wrong at the start of my commentary where I mentioned that, although the headboard called the train the Blue Belle this was carried on a number of special trains regardless of their published names., Adam @AJC although I could have been more specific about the photos of the E4. However, with your advice and that from Martin @Martin Shaw we have confirmation of the date.

I didn't know the story about the buffers on 123 though, Jim @JimG although I've seen other photos of the loco with the thistles on the buffers. I always understood these were created by an artist fitter using emery paper - that's certainly been a technique in creating a quartered pattern on other locos. Perhaps you are right Simon @simond and that they'll turn up one day although we probably agree that it's unlikely in the extreme.

Another special train here with celebrated B12 4-6-0 61572 seen last in post #4816 and here heading the “Wandering 1500” railtour past Hornsey on 5th October 1963 – see The Railtour Files which confirms the loco had been withdrawn before this rail tour but was resurrected for this train after storage at Devons Road Shed. The loco hauled the train throughout which started at Broad Street to Bedford Midland, Northampton Castle, Stratford Upon Avon Old Town, Rugby Midland and back to Broad Street. The loco was allocated to Ipswich from March 1953 (BR Database) and then Norwich Thorpe in October 1959, being withdrawn in September 1961. (SLS). Details of the life thereafter are at 61572 (LNER 8572, LNER 7486, LNER 1572 & BR 61572)

I love the B12 climbing through Hornsey with that beautiful exhaust trailing behind - reminds me of the parallel running in nearby north London ER territory during Steam on the Met in 2000, when my train ran alongside 61572 as it pounded up the 1 in 200/1 in 110 to the iron bridge at Northwood at a good 40 mph or so. I wasn’t expecting it to have such a deep exhaust note or to look so stately and graceful in motion with those coupling rods revolving and no valve gear in sight. I bet it sounded absolutely superb as it pounded past Tim in 1963.

I agree with every word, David @David B . I also attended most if not all the Steam on the Met events and always tried to book (usually successfully) the parallel running. It's a great shame those events stopped. I recognise that occasional special trains still operate but they seem a lot more expensive and are less inclusive than the Steam on the Met.

Standard Class 4 2-6-0 76093 described in Tim's notes to be at Glasgow Charing Cross which it certainly isn't but in view of earlier comments possibly on a Glasgow train at Shettleston on 14th September 1961. Home shed was Parkhead where it was allocated in January 1961 then Corkerhill in October the same year where it was withdrawn on 22nd February 1967. (SLS). It was scrapped at Campbells, Airdrie in April 1967. (BR Database). Note the freight leaving the adjacent sidings about which I have no details.

The J37 coal train photo is perhaps some sort of shunting move, as there doesn't seem to be anything high enough at the far end, to be a brake van. This might account for the man standing near the loco – a shunter?

Good bit of observation there, Barry @Barry37 . You may well be correct. In fact following your comment I had a look at the original negative numbers and this photo comes before the unidentified J37 in post #5294 (img852) so it may well be the same loco in shunting mode.
